Maternal Health Substance Use Disorder
Resource Library

Maternal mental health and substance use disorders are among the leading causes of pregnancy-related complications and deaths in the United States. Conditions like depression, anxiety, and opioid use disorder can impact both pregnancy and postpartum health — yet many mothers never receive the care they need.

The Maternal Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders (MMHSUD) program helps strengthen provider capacity to screen, assess, treat, and refer patients through practical tools, training, and resources. This page connects providers, patients, and families with education, support services, and pathways to care.

Why This Matters

  • 1 in 5 mothers experience a mental health condition during pregnancy or postpartum.
  • Nearly 75% of women experiencing maternal mental health conditions do not receive treatment.
  • Suicide and overdose are leading causes of death during the first year postpartum.
  • Early screening, referrals, and community support can improve outcomes for mothers, babies, and families.

Together, we can expand access to compassionate care and support healthier outcomes for every family.
